5 Signs Your Tulsa Driveway Needs Crack Filling — Not Replacement
Knowing when to repair vs. replace your asphalt driveway can save you thousands. Here are the five signs that crack filling is the right call for your Tulsa home.
When to Repair vs. Replace Your Asphalt Driveway
One of the most common questions Oklahoma PRM gets is: “Should I fill these cracks or just replace the whole driveway?” In many cases — especially for driveways under 15 years old in decent structural condition — crack filling is the right answer. Here’s how to tell.
Sign #1: Cracks Are Less Than 1 Inch Wide
Width is the most reliable indicator. Cracks up to 1 inch wide — including common shrinkage cracks, edge cracks, and transverse (horizontal) cracks — are excellent candidates for hot-pour crack filling. Once a crack exceeds 1.5–2 inches, the structural integrity of the surrounding asphalt becomes a concern and more extensive repair may be needed.
Sign #2: You Have Linear or Transverse Cracks (Not Spider-Web Patterns)
Linear cracks running with or across the driveway are normal aging cracks caused by thermal expansion, Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycles, and oxidation. These are easily sealed. Alligator cracking — the interconnected spider-web pattern — is different. Alligator cracking indicates base failure and requires patching or replacement, not crack filling.
Sign #3: The Pavement Is Still Structurally Firm
Walk your driveway and probe the cracked areas. If the asphalt around the crack is solid and doesn’t flex or crumble when you press on it, the base is likely intact. If the surface feels spongy or asphalt chunks break off easily, you may have a failing base layer that needs more than crack filling.
Sign #4: Your Driveway Is Less Than 15 Years Old
Asphalt driveways in Tulsa typically last 15–25 years with proper maintenance. If yours is under 15 years old and the overall surface is in fair condition, crack filling and sealcoating can extend its life by another 5–10 years and delay replacement significantly.
Sign #5: Fewer Than 30–40% of the Surface Is Cracked
A useful rule of thumb: if cracks cover less than 30–40% of your total driveway surface, crack filling is cost-effective. Once cracking is widespread across most of the surface, the labor and material cost of filling every crack approaches replacement cost — making full resurfacing or replacement the smarter investment.
Quick Reference: Crack Fill or Replace?
| What You See | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Hairline to ½” linear cracks | Crack fill — easy repair, strong ROI |
| ½”–1″ wide cracks, few in number | Crack fill with routing for better adhesion |
| Edge cracking along driveway border | Crack fill + assess drainage issues |
| Alligator (web) cracking in one area | Patch that section, fill remaining cracks |
| Alligator cracking across 50%+ of surface | Replace driveway — crack filling won’t hold |
| Rutting, depressions, or sinking | Investigate base — may need full replacement |
| Driveway over 20 years old, widespread cracks | Consult a paving professional for assessment |
The Cost of Waiting: Oklahoma’s Crack Accelerators
Tulsa’s climate is particularly hard on asphalt. Ignoring even small cracks for one winter season can significantly escalate repair costs:
- Freeze-thaw damage: Water enters cracks, freezes overnight, expands, and widens the crack — repeated 30+ times each winter
- Clay soil movement: Tulsa’s clay-heavy subsoil expands when wet and contracts when dry, shifting beneath the pavement
- Summer UV oxidation: 100°F+ summers cause asphalt to oxidize and become brittle, accelerating crack growth
- Weed intrusion: Roots from weeds growing in cracks physically pry asphalt apart over time
A crack that costs $150–$300 to fill today can easily become a $1,500–$4,000 driveway replacement if left untreated for 2–3 Oklahoma winters.
